ANNUAL PERFORMANCES

Our Annual Performance (AP) is the key emphasis among all EDC activities.

Based on masterpieces of famous playwrights, the AP collection consists of various categories involving drama, comedy, farce and tragedy. In the past years, we have put on plays with diverse themes about love, sarcasm and social manners.

All members spare no efforts on the production of the AP.  To guarantee the high quality of AP, we always strive for excellence. The AP preparation shows our strong dedication and passion.

The Visit                                           2018

​The Great Gatsby            2017

Originally a 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby has been adapted into a stage play by English Drama Club.

​The story centers upon a mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his obsessive passion for Daisy Buchanan. It explores themes of misplaced idealism, social upheaval and the loss of innocence against the backdrop of 1920s Jazz Age New York, painting a cautionary picture of the American Dream.P

​A Mid-Summer Night's Dream
          2016

​
The story takes place in the woods a few miles outside ancient Athens. Hermia and Alexander, a pair of lovers disapproved by all, find out by chance that George, Hermia’s father, is determined to marry her to Deymond who he thinks make a perfect match.

Reluctant to follow his father’s wishes, Hermia decides to elope with Alexander, the man of her own heart. Meanwhile, Ella, her best friend, who is madly in love with Deymond herself , contrives to reveal their plan to win his love.

What will happen in this magical forest? What will be the course of true love?

​She Stoops to Conquer

Category: Comedy


Wealthy countryman Mr. Hardcastle arranges for his daughter Kate to meet Charles Marlow, the son of a rich Londoner, hoping the pair will marry. Unfortunately, Marlow is nervous around upper-class women, yet the complete opposite around working-class women.

On his first acquaintance with Kate, the latter realises she will have to pretend to be 'common', or Marlow will not woo her. Thus Kate 'stoops to conquer', by posing as a maid, hoping to put Marlow at his ease so he falls for her.

​The Servant of Two Masters            2014

Bella, a woman who traveled to Venice disguised as Vincent, her dead brother, was in search for the killer. Vincent forbade her to marry Florindo, who killed him in a duel. Bella, in order to help her lover escape and to finally marry him, had to collect dowry from Lucia. Thinking that Vincent was dead, Clarice, Lucia’s daughter, Vincent’s betrothed, was engaged with Silvio. Ironically, Lucia, interested in Vincent’s fortune, was determined to marry Clarice to Bella, the disguised Vincent. Dino, Bella’s servant, in the hope to be paid more, decided to serve two masters. As Dino ran around Venice frantically, trying to fill the orders of two masters, his identity almost revealed until that moment...

The governor mistook the poor young man from Saint Petersburg for the inspector. Besides the governer himself, his subordinates tried their best to fawn on the "inspector". Ironically, both the governer's wife and daughter fell in love with the poor man...

Lady Windermere's Fan                   2012

Author: Oscar Wilde
Category: Comedy

The story concerns Lady Windermere who discovers that her husband may be having an affair with another woman. She confronts her husband but he instead invites the other woman, Mrs Erlynne, to her birthday ball. Angered by her husband's unfaithfulness, Lady Windermere leaves her husband for another lover. After discovering what has transpired, Mrs Erlynne follows Lady Windermere and attempts to persuade her to return to her husband and in the course of this, Mrs Erlynne is discovered in a compromising position. She sacrifices herself and her reputation in order to save Lady Windermere's marriage as Mrs Erlynne is Lady Windermere’s mother, who abandoned her family twenty years before the time the play was set.

​The Imaginary Invalid

Author: Molière


The play is about a miser, Argan, who imagines himself terribly ill while he is not. He dutifully sticks to any instructions given by his doctor Crosby, who exploits Argan’s hypochondria for all it is worth. Argan wants his daughter Veronica to marry a doctor so he can get free medical care, even though she is already in love with Patrick. Together with Argan's smart maid Nina, his brother Antonio attempts to cure Argan of his hypochondria and fixation on doctors. Together, they convince him to play dead, in order to find out who is really loyal to him. As it turns out, Argan's second wife Bella is only after his money, whereas his daughter really loves him. After the revival of the supposedly-dead Argan, Bella has been dumped and Veronica is free to marry the man she loves.

PYGMALION                                2010

It tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can successfully pass off a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, as a refined society lady by teaching her how to speak with an upper class accent and training her in etiquette. In the process, Higgins and Eliza grow close, but she ultimately rejects his domineering ways and declares she will marry Freddy Eynsford-Hill -- a young, poor, gentleman.

TAMING OF THE SHREW                  2009

The main plot depicts the courtship of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments—the "taming"—until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. The subplot features a competition between the suitors of Katherina's more desirable sister, Bianca.
